Salkantay Trek to Machu Picchu 4 days tour itinerary
Cusco – Mollepata – Soraypampa – Humantay Lake
A first day among snow-capped peaks, with Cusco's most famous turquoise lake as the great reward.
- The adventure starts very early with the pickup from your hotel in Cusco. After about 2 hours through the South Valley we reach Mollepata, where we enjoy a nourishing buffet breakfast.
- We continue to Challacancha (3,800 m / 12,467 ft), the start of the hike. For almost 3 hours we walk through Andean scenery to Soraypampa, our camp at the foot of the Humantay and Salkantay peaks.
- After settling in and having lunch, we hike to Humantay Lake (4,200 m / 13,780 ft), a turquoise gem fed by meltwater from Mount Humantay and considered sacred by Andean communities.
- At night we stay in domes or cabins at Soraypampa, depending on availability, and enjoy a comforting dinner. Weather permitting, we can admire a spectacular starry sky with the constellations of the southern hemisphere.
Soraypampa – Salkantay Pass – Huayracmachay – Collpapampa
The most challenging and spectacular day of the adventure: from snow-capped peaks to cloud forest.
- After breakfast at camp we begin a steady climb of about 4 hours to the Salkantay Pass, the highest point of the trek.
- At the Salkantay Pass (4,630 m) we rest, take in the view and join in the traditional building of apachetas, small stone offerings that express gratitude and respect for the mountains. Along the way you may see alpacas, llamas, viscachas, deer, foxes and a variety of birds.
- We descend for about 3 hours to Huayracmachay, where we have lunch. The landscape changes as we leave the high Andes behind and gradually enter the cloud forest.
- After another 3 hours of hiking we reach Collpapampa (2,950 m), where we spend the night.
Collpapampa – Playa Sahuayaco – Hidroeléctrica – Aguas Calientes
A warm day among coffee farms, fruit trees and orchids, heading for the gateway to Machu Picchu.
- The day starts with a cup of hot tea and a hearty breakfast. We then hike for about 5 hours towards the Santa Teresa Valley, through an increasingly warm and tropical landscape.
- Along the way we see plantations of coffee, bananas, avocados and granadilla, as well as a variety of endemic orchids, while the guide explains how coffee is grown and produced.
- After lunch in Santa Teresa, tourist transport takes us in about 45 minutes to Hidroeléctrica station.
- From there we walk for just over 2 hours alongside the railway to Aguas Calientes, where you will have free time to explore the town and, optionally, visit its hot springs.
Aguas Calientes – Machu Picchu – Ollantaytambo – Cusco
The most anticipated moment of the trip: Machu Picchu.
- Early in the morning, after breakfast at the hotel, we head up to the Inca citadel with our guide. Most people walk up; optionally you can take the bus, a ride of about 25 minutes through the vegetation surrounding the wonder of the world.
- Arriving early lets us enter among the first visitors and explore Machu Picchu in a calmer atmosphere, on a guided tour of 2 to 3 hours.
- Afterwards, if you have booked it in advance, you can climb Wayna Picchu Mountain for a breathtaking panoramic view of the whole archaeological complex.
- Back in Aguas Calientes, we take the train to Ollantaytambo and, from there, tourist transport to Cusco.

Frequently asked questions about the Salkantay Trek to Machu Picchu 4 days tour
How far in advance should I book?
As early as possible, ideally 3 to 4 months ahead, especially in high season (April to October). The route is in high demand and Machu Picchu tickets are allocated by time slot, with limited daily capacity. We suggest booking as soon as your dates and flights are confirmed.
When is the best time to do the Salkantay Trek?
The Andes have two seasons: the dry season, from April to October, and the rainy season, from November to March, when the weather can alternate between rain, sun and cloud in a single day. The best time is the dry season, with better hiking conditions and clearer views, although the tour runs all year round.
Does this tour run all year, including February?
Yes, including February and March, always subject to weather conditions. In those months the rain is more frequent and intense, so the itinerary may be modified, rerouted or even cancelled if conditions put travellers' safety at risk.
How do I know if this tour is right for me?
It is one of the most spectacular routes to Machu Picchu, ideal for adventurous couples, groups of friends and families. It requires good fitness and being ready to walk several hours a day on varied terrain and at altitude. We recommend some preparation beforehand and good acclimatisation in Cusco.
What ages is it recommended for?
It is recommended for children aged 8 and over who are used to walking and outdoor activities. There is no upper age limit for adults: many travellers aged 60 to 65 or older complete the route successfully, with good fitness, a prior medical check-up and travel insurance. For children and older travellers we suggest the private service, with a more flexible pace.
From how many passengers is departure guaranteed?
Departures are guaranteed from 2 people. If you are travelling alone, you can join a shared group, subject to availability. For more information, ask your sales executive or write to us at info@sakuraexpedition.com.
Is the Machu Picchu entrance included?
Yes. We book the entrance according to the circuits available on your date, always prioritising Circuit 2; if it is full, one of the other two circuits will be assigned. We recommend booking 3 to 5 months ahead to secure the best time slots.
How long do we spend at Machu Picchu?
On day 4 you will explore Machu Picchu with your guide for about 2 to 3 hours, discovering the history, mysteries and secrets of this wonder of the world.
What are the differences between the Inca Trail and the Salkantay route?
- The Inca Trail requires limited permits and compulsory advance booking, making it a more exclusive route.
- The Salkantay Trek does not require special permits, so it offers more availability and flexibility.
- On the Salkantay you spend the last night in a hotel in Aguas Calientes, while on the Inca Trail you reach Machu Picchu directly from the camps.
- Both routes require good fitness and acclimatisation in Cusco.
How difficult is the 4-day Salkantay Trek?
It is moderate to challenging. Day 2 is the most demanding because of the climb to the Salkantay Pass, at 4,630 m. With good acclimatisation and a steady pace, most travellers complete the route without any problems.
How many kilometres and hours do we walk each day?
The full route covers about 52 km / 32 miles and 26 to 28 hours of hiking in total:
- Day 1: 10 km / 6 miles.
- Day 2: 22 km / 14 miles.
- Day 3: 20 km / 12 miles.
- Day 4: guided tour of Machu Picchu.
Each hiking day involves several hours on the trail, depending on the group's pace, the weather and stops to rest and visit the sights.
At what altitude does the hike start and what is the highest point?
The hike starts at Challacancha, at 3,800 m / 12,467 ft, and the highest point is the Salkantay Pass, at 4,630 m / 15,190 ft, reached on day 2. Along the route the scenery changes dramatically, from the high Andes to the cloud forests leading to Machu Picchu.
How many days before should I arrive in Cusco to acclimatise?
We recommend arriving at least 2 days in advance. During that time we can help you arrange acclimatisation activities, such as a half-day City Tour or a trip to the Sacred Valley. If you are coming from another high-altitude area, 1 full day in Cusco will be enough.
How safe is the trek?
The Salkantay Trek is a safe route, highly recommended for adventure travellers. To enjoy it most, we advise doing it in the dry season, when the weather is more stable.
What happens if I feel unwell during the trek?
Our guide will immediately assess any altitude sickness, exhaustion or other issue and provide the necessary assistance, arranging the appropriate steps depending on your condition and location.
If day 1 felt harder than expected, you can hire a horse for day 2, the most challenging stage, for about 65 USD, subject to availability.
How many people share the domes, cabins and hotel rooms?
We have domes for 2 and 4 people. If two of you are travelling and would like a dome to yourselves, let us know when booking. Single accommodation is also available on prior request at an additional cost.
Are there toilets and showers along the route?
Yes, there are basic toilets at the camps and rest stops. Some camps have cold showers, and some local families offer hot showers for an extra charge. In addition, every morning our staff provide hot water for washing.
Do I need trekking poles?
They are highly recommended: they relieve pressure on your knees on steep descents and help on the climbs. If you bring your own, make sure they have rubber tips. If you do not have any, you can rent them from us or buy them in Cusco.
Is there mobile signal or internet during the hike?
There is signal as far as Mollepata, on the morning of day 1. After that, the signal is limited or non-existent for most of the route; at camps such as Soraypampa and Collpapampa there may be WiFi for an extra charge. Connection improves as you descend towards Santa Teresa and Aguas Calientes.
Can I charge my devices along the way?
There are no charging points during the hike, so we recommend bringing a fully charged power bank for the 3 days until Aguas Calientes.
How do strikes or roadblocks affect the itinerary?
External factors such as strikes, demonstrations or roadblocks can cause changes. Our team monitors the situation constantly and offers alternatives such as adjusted timings, routes or rescheduling. We therefore recommend travel insurance that covers possible unforeseen costs.
Is travel insurance compulsory?
It is not compulsory, but we recommend it for your peace of mind, as it can assist you in case of lost luggage, cancellations, strikes, natural disasters or other unforeseen events.
Can I change my passport number after booking?
A change is only possible with a copy of both the new and the old passport. If you no longer have the old one, any official ID with the same name will be accepted. Please also make sure your passport does not expire within six months of or during your trip.
How do I get to Cusco?
Most travellers arrive by air. Cusco airport only handles domestic flights: if you are flying from abroad via Lima, you will need to collect your luggage in Lima and check it in again for your flight to Cusco. Airlines such as LATAM, Sky Airline and JetSMART fly the Lima – Cusco route with similar schedules; we recommend LATAM for its better response to unexpected cancellations or delays.
Will I receive information before the trip?
Yes. The day before departure you will receive detailed information from your guide, either in a group briefing or individually at your hotel.
What is the booking process?
Step 1. Availability enquiry. Write to us at info@sakuraexpedition.com to check dates. We will send you a booking form for each participant to complete.
Step 2. Passenger details. To arrange your Machu Picchu entrance and tour services we need, exactly as they appear on your passport, your full name, gender, passport number, date of birth (dd/mm/yyyy) and nationality.
Step 3. Deposit and confirmation. Once we receive the forms, we request a deposit of USD 200.00 per person to buy the tickets. We recommend booking in advance, as places sell out quickly.
Step 4. Final confirmation. Once the tickets are secured, you will receive the official invoice and your booking will be 100 % guaranteed.
How is the outstanding balance paid?
The balance can be paid in cash, in US dollars or Peruvian soles, at our office in Cusco or as indicated by your sales executive.
Can I cancel or change the date?
Once your booking is confirmed, the Machu Picchu entrance cannot be cancelled or refunded, as it is bought immediately to secure your place. Date changes are subject to availability and the programme's conditions. We recommend reviewing the cancellation policy with your sales executive.
Can I leave my luggage at your office?
Yes. During the trip, your main luggage can be stored at our office or at your hotel, free of charge.
Should I tip?
Tips are entirely voluntary. All of our team receives fair pay, so any gratuity is at your discretion.
