Frequently asked questions about the Salkantay Trek and Humantay Lake tour
From how many passengers is departure guaranteed?
The programme has guaranteed departures from 2 passengers and runs with a maximum of 8 participants, for a more comfortable and personal experience. If you are travelling alone, ask us about availability to join a group already confirmed on your chosen date.
How do I know if this trip is right for me?
It is ideal for adventurous travellers who love mountains, nature and hiking among spectacular scenery. The route requires moderate to good fitness, as it includes high-altitude climbs and several hours of hiking. For this reason, it is not recommended for children under 10 or adults over 70, unless they have previous mountain hiking experience and adequate fitness.
If you prefer a gentler pace, we recommend the private service, which lets you hike at your own pace, take more breaks and enjoy every view with greater flexibility.
Can I do this hike without previous trekking experience?
Yes. You do not need to be an experienced hiker, but we recommend moderate fitness and being used to walking for several hours. Our guide will keep a suitable pace for the group.
How difficult is the hike to the Salkantay Pass?
It is moderate to challenging because of the altitude, the long climbs and the several hours of hiking. Adequate fitness is recommended to enjoy it fully.
What is the maximum altitude of the route?
The highest point is the Salkantay Pass, at 4,630 m / 15,190 ft. We therefore recommend spending at least 2 days in Cusco before the hike to adapt better to the altitude.
How many days before should I arrive in Cusco to acclimatise?
We recommend arriving at least 2 days in advance. During that time we can help you arrange acclimatisation activities, such as a half-day City Tour or a full-day excursion to the Sacred Valley, combining rest and exploration at your own pace.
If you are coming from another high-altitude area of Peru, 1 full day in Cusco will be enough to rest and recover from the journey.
What happens if the altitude affects me during the hike?
Our guides are trained to handle any altitude-related situation, and we carry an oxygen tank and first-aid kit throughout the route.
Is camping equipment included?
Yes. We include basic camping equipment, and the camp has basic toilet facilities. There are no showers, but we provide hot water in the morning and evening for washing. Sleeping bags are not included, but you can rent one from us.
Can I rent trekking poles?
Yes, when you make your booking, for 15 USD. They are highly recommended for added stability and less effort during the hike.
What is the weather like on the Salkantay?
It is changeable and can shift quickly during the day. Sunny mornings and clear skies are common, while afternoons and nights tend to be cold. It can rain at any time of year, so we recommend bringing warm clothing and a waterproof layer.
Is there mobile phone signal during the hike?
The signal is limited for much of the route. Some areas near Soraypampa may have partial coverage, depending on the network, so we recommend letting family or friends know before you start the hike.
Will I receive information before the trip?
Yes. The day before departure you will receive detailed information from your guide, either in a group briefing or individually at your hotel.
Is travel insurance compulsory?
It is not compulsory, but we recommend it for your peace of mind, as it can assist you in case of lost luggage, cancellations, strikes, natural disasters or other unforeseen events.
Can I leave my luggage at your office?
Yes. During the trip, your main luggage can be stored at our office or at your hotel, free of charge.
What is the booking process?
Step 1. Availability enquiry. Write to us at info@sakuraexpedition.com to check dates. We will send you a booking form for each participant to complete.
Step 2. Passenger details. To arrange the entrance tickets we need, exactly as they appear on your passport, your full name, gender, passport number, date of birth (dd/mm/yyyy) and nationality.
Step 3. Deposit and confirmation. Once we receive the forms, we request a deposit of USD 200.00 per person. We recommend booking in advance, as places sell out quickly.
Step 4. Final confirmation. Once the booking is confirmed, you will receive the official invoice and your place will be 100 % guaranteed.
How is the outstanding balance paid?
The balance can be paid in cash, in US dollars or Peruvian soles, in Cusco, one or two days before the tour, according to the conditions indicated by your sales executive.
Should I tip?
Tips are entirely voluntary. All of our team receives fair pay, so any gratuity is at your discretion.
