Frequently asked questions about Pallay Punchu Mountain
How difficult is the hike to Pallay Punchu?
It is moderate, mainly because of the altitude, which exceeds 4,700 m / 15,420 ft. The trail is not technically difficult, but the altitude and the final slope require a head for heights and proper acclimatisation in Cusco beforehand.
How do I know if this tour is right for me?
It is ideal for travellers looking for an authentic experience in the Andes, away from the crowded routes and with unique natural landscapes. It is perfect for those who enjoy walking at altitude and landscape photography, and who have a basic to moderate level of fitness. You do not need to be an expert trekker, but you should be well acclimatised in Cusco before the trip.
Why is it called Pallay Punchu?
In Quechua, Pallay Punchu means "woven poncho" or "adorned poncho", as its sharp slopes and coloured stripes resemble the design of a traditional Andean poncho. The name combines two words: pallay (to weave, embroider or create iconographic designs) and punchu (poncho).
Why is it called "the new rainbow mountain"?
It is known this way because of its recent popularity with visitors, having gone viral during the pandemic, and because of the minerals that give it its variety of colours. It is a spectacular alternative, with a less demanding hike than the classic Vinicunca.
Is the Pallay Punchu hike suitable for most people?
Yes, for anyone with a basic level of fitness who has acclimatised in Cusco. The ascent takes only 40 minutes to 1 hour; the real challenge is the altitude, close to 4,730 m / 15,518 ft, rather than the technique.
Could I suffer from altitude sickness during the visit?
Yes. As the route takes place at high altitude, you may experience symptoms of soroche, such as headache, fatigue or dizziness. We recommend good acclimatisation in Cusco beforehand, staying well hydrated and walking at a calm pace.
Is it suitable for older travellers or people with medical conditions?
Yes, as long as they have good mobility and, if necessary, medical clearance. For greater comfort we recommend the private service, which allows you to go at your own pace and take breaks along the way.
Can I hire a horse at Pallay Punchu?
No. For safety reasons and because of the slope of the final section, the route can only be done on foot. We recommend acclimatising beforehand so you can enjoy the hike more comfortably.
Is oxygen provided during the tour?
Yes. We carry an oxygen tank for emergencies, and our guides are trained in first aid to ensure your safety throughout the experience.
When is the best season to visit Pallay Punchu?
The dry season, between April and October, when the weather is more stable and the views of the mountain are clearer.
How many people are in each group?
Groups have a maximum of 18 passengers, for a more personalised, safe and well-organised experience.
How far is it from Cusco?
Pallay Punchu is approximately 190 km south of Cusco. The drive takes around 4 hours: first to Cusipata, then around 2 hours to Marangani and, finally, a stretch on a dirt road to the start of the hike.
What clothing should I bring?
The best approach is to dress in layers, because of the cold and changeable weather: a warm jacket, gloves, a hat, comfortable trekking clothes, suitable shoes and a rain poncho.
How long is the hike to Pallay Punchu?
The ascent from the starting point takes between 40 minutes and 1 hour, depending on your pace and fitness, and the descent is quicker. In total, the round-trip hike takes between 1 and 2 hours, including time at the viewpoints.
Are there toilets along the route?
No. The route has no developed tourist infrastructure: there are no formal toilets or stalls along the trail. Basic facilities are only available in the village of Marangani, at the start of the route, or during the meal stops.
What happens if the weather is bad?
Safety comes first. If conditions are unsafe or visibility is very poor, the guide may adjust the timings, shorten the hike or change the plan to keep the group safe.
What happens if I feel unwell during the tour?
Our team is prepared to provide immediate assistance for any discomfort. All our guides are trained in first aid and assess each case to ensure, if necessary, a safe return to the starting point.
Is there mobile phone signal or internet during the tour?
The signal is very limited or non-existent for much of the route. We recommend letting family or contacts know that you may be out of touch for several hours.
What is the booking process?
Step 1. Availability enquiry. Write to us at info@sakuraexpedition.com to check dates. We will send you a booking form for each participant to complete.
Step 2. Passenger details. To process the booking we need, exactly as they appear on your passport, your full name, gender, passport number, date of birth (dd/mm/yyyy) and nationality.
Step 3. Deposit and confirmation. A deposit per person is required to secure your place. We recommend booking in advance, especially on public holidays and in high season.
Step 4. Final confirmation. Once the booking is confirmed, you will receive the official invoice and your place will be 100 % guaranteed.
How is the outstanding balance paid?
The balance can be paid in cash, in US dollars or Peruvian soles, in Cusco, one or two days before the tour, according to the conditions indicated by your sales executive.
Can I cancel or change the date?
Yes. You can cancel or change your booking date up to 48 hours before departure. In these cases an administrative fee applies, which is deducted from the total amount as appropriate.
