Cusco – Manu Cloud Forest – Dorado Lodge
From the Andes to the cloud forest, and on into the high rainforest.
- The adventure begins with the pickup from your hotel in Cusco, between 5:00 and 5:30 a.m., to set out on the journey to Manu National Park.
- Along the way we visit the mysterious Ninamarca chullpas and the charming colonial village of Paucartambo, where history and tradition come alive.
- We continue to Acjanaco, the gateway to Manu, and descend through the magical cloud forest. On the way we stop to look for orchids, giant ferns and a wide variety of birds, with the chance to spot the majestic cock-of-the-rock, Peru's national bird.
- In the afternoon we reach the village of Salvación, where we change to a 4x4 pickup to continue along the Amazonian route to Dorado Lodge.
- After dinner, those who wish can join a night walk to discover amphibians and other fascinating species that come to life after dark.
Dorado Lodge – Manu Reserved Zone – Casa Matsiguenka
A full day on the river, heading into the heart of the Reserved Zone.
- Very early in the morning we board the boat to sail along the Alto Madre de Dios River. Breakfast is served on board as we travel surrounded by dense rainforest.
- We reach the Limonal control post, where the park rangers welcome us to Manu National Park and register the group.
- We continue along the Manu River for almost 6 hours, with chances to watch wildlife on its beaches and banks.
- In the afternoon we arrive at Casa Matsiguenka, where we share time with native families and stay in their bungalows. We have dinner and spend the night there.
Casa Matsiguenka – Salvador Lake – Otorongo Lake
The day of the lakes: giant otters, an observation tower and primary forest.
- After breakfast we explore Salvador Lake on a paddle catamaran. This lake is one of the highlights of Manu and home to the impressive giant otters, as well as birds such as herons, skimmers and macaws.
- In the afternoon we visit Otorongo Lake, where we climb a 20-metre observation tower that lets us admire the rainforest from the canopy and look for caimans, monkeys and other species.
- For the rest of the day we walk along primary forest trails, discovering the biodiversity and the different ecosystems of Manu.
- We return to our accommodation for dinner and our second night at Casa Matsiguenka.
Casa Matsiguenka – Reserved Zone – Diamante Native Community – Dorado Lodge
The journey back down the Manu River, with a visit to the Diamante community.
- Very early we begin the return, sailing for about 6 hours along the Manu River, with new chances to watch wildlife on the beaches and banks.
- After registering again at the Limonal post we continue downriver, with a stop at the Diamante Native Community, where we can support the local economy by buying handicrafts and traditional products.
- In the afternoon we arrive at Dorado Lodge.
- After dinner we set out on a night walk in search of nocturnal wildlife: frogs, insects, spiders, reptiles and other species. We then spend the night at the lodge.
Dorado Lodge – Parrot and Macaw Clay Lick – Cusco
The spectacle of the clay lick at dawn and the return to Cusco.
- At dawn we visit the spectacular parrot and macaw clay lick, a special place where these birds come down to feed on the minerals that aid their digestion.
- We return to the lodge for breakfast and board the 4x4 pickups back to Salvación.
- On the way we visit a hummingbird garden and stop in Pilcopata to try juices and ice creams made from local fruits such as aguaje, pineapple and cocona.
- From there we continue to Cusco, completing our adventure in Manu National Park.

Am I guaranteed to see jaguars, giant otters or cocks-of-the-rock?
No. These are wild animals and sightings depend on natural factors such as the weather, their behaviour, the season and where each species is at the time. The guide will search for them and watch them responsibly during the activities.
What is the visit to Salvador Lake like?
It is done on a paddle catamaran, which lets us explore the lake quietly and look for giant otters, caimans, birds and other species without disturbing the environment.
What do you do at Otorongo Lake?
We explore the forest and climb an observation tower about 20 metres high, from which you can admire the forest from the canopy and look for wildlife.
Is the night walk included?
Yes. The programme includes night walks, subject to weather and safety conditions. They are a chance to look for frogs, insects, spiders, reptiles and other nocturnal species.
What is the accommodation like?
The programme includes 4 nights in lodges: Dorado Lodge and Casa Matsiguenka. They are Amazonian-style lodges, integrated with their natural surroundings, with double to quadruple rooms depending on availability.
What are the rooms like at Casa Matsiguenka?
Casa Matsiguenka offers bungalows, usually with double rooms and a private or shared bathroom depending on availability. It is a nature lodge, so we recommend not expecting the same conditions as a conventional hotel.
Are meals included? Are there vegetarian options?
Yes. The programme includes breakfast on days 2 to 5, lunch and dinner on days 1 to 4, and snacks along the way. Breakfast on the first day and lunch and dinner on the last day are not included, because of the departure and return times. Vegetarian options can be arranged in advance at no extra cost.
Is drinking water provided during the trip?
Yes, the programme includes water during the trip. We also recommend bringing a reusable bottle to stay well hydrated during the activities.
Do I need trekking boots?
Comfortable footwear for the transfers and walks is recommended. Rubber boots for activities in the rainforest are included in the programme.
Do I need to bring binoculars?
They are not compulsory, but they are highly recommended for watching birds, monkeys and other animals at a distance. You can also request binocular rental as an add-on.
What should I bring on the tour?

Is there mobile phone signal or internet during the tour?
Signal is limited or non-existent in much of the Reserved Zone. We recommend letting your family or contacts know before the trip starts and making use of areas with connectivity when they are available.
What happens if I feel unwell during the trip?
Your safety comes first. The guide carries a first-aid kit and will assess any discomfort during the activities. If necessary, the appropriate assistance will be arranged according to your location and the conditions at the time.
