- From the natural viewpoint of Capuliyoc we admire the imposing Padreyoc snow peak and the deep Apurímac Canyon, one of the most impressive in South America.
- We descend along ancient trails surrounded by flora and fauna, with panoramic views of the valley and, conditions permitting, our first distant views of Choquequirao.
- In Chiquisca we stop to rest and have lunch. We then descend to Playa Rosalina (1,800 m a.s.l.), on the banks of the sacred Apurímac River.
- A short climb takes us to Santa Rosa (1,950 m a.s.l.), where tea time, a delicious dinner and a well-earned rest await.

- With our guide we explore its most important sectors: ceremonial plazas, religious buildings, agricultural terraces and the famous Llamas Sector, one of the symbols of Choquequirao.
- We return to Marampata, our camp, to watch the sunset over the valley and, with luck, the flight of the Andean condor, before dinner.
Marampata – Playa Rosalina – Chiquisca

- After breakfast we descend to Playa Rosalina (1,800 m a.s.l.), where we take a short break before a gentle climb to Chiquisca.

Frequently asked questions about the Choquequirao Trek 4 days tour
How far in advance should I book?
As early as possible, ideally 2 to 3 months ahead, especially in high season (April to October), so you can join an already confirmed group.
How long is the Choquequirao Trek?
It lasts 4 days and 3 nights, covering about 52 km there and back from Capuliyoc. It is a demanding route, ideal for travellers in good physical condition.
How difficult is it?
It is moderate to challenging, with steep climbs and descents in the Apurímac Canyon and 3 to 8 hours of hiking per day. It is recommended for well-prepared hikers.
What is the maximum altitude of the route?
About 3,050 m a.s.l. / 10,007 ft at the Choquequirao archaeological complex. Although it does not exceed 4,000 m a.s.l., the trek is demanding because of the big elevation changes from the Apurímac River, at about 1,800 m a.s.l.
How many kilometres and hours do you hike each day?
The full route covers about 52 km there and back:
- Day 1: 17 km / 10.56 miles, about 7 hours.
- Day 2: 9 km / 5.59 miles, about 8 hours, including the visit to Choquequirao.
- Day 3: 18 km / 11.18 miles, about 6 hours.
- Day 4: 8 km / 4.97 miles, 3 to 4 hours.
Times depend on the group's pace, the weather and stops along the way.
When is the best time to do the Choquequirao Trek?
The dry season, from April to October, especially May, June and September, when the weather is more stable, the days are sunny and the views are better, although the nights are cold.
Do I need a special permit?
No special permit is required, only the entrance fee to the Choquequirao Archaeological Park (about 60 soles), which is already included in your tour.
Is the Choquequirao Trek safe?
Yes. In terms of personal safety it is a secure, quiet route with few visitors. However, it is physically demanding because of its steep elevation changes and the canyon climate, so we recommend good preparation and travelling in the dry season.
How do I know if this tour is right for me?
It is one of the most spectacular routes in Cusco, ideal for couples, groups of friends and adventurous families looking for nature and breathtaking scenery. It requires good physical fitness and being ready to walk several hours a day on varied terrain. We recommend preparing beforehand and acclimatising in Cusco for at least 1 or 2 days.
What is the recommended minimum age, and is there a maximum age for adults?
It is recommended for children from 8 years old who are used to walking and outdoor activities. There is no maximum age for adults: many travellers aged 60 to 65 or older complete the route successfully, provided they are in good physical condition, have had a prior medical check-up and have travel insurance. For children and older adults we suggest the private service, with a more flexible pace.
What is the minimum number of travellers for a guaranteed departure?
Departures are guaranteed from 2 people. If you are travelling alone, you can join a shared group, subject to availability. For more information, contact your sales representative or write to us at info@sakuraexpedition.com.
What kind of accommodation is used?
On the first and third nights you stay in small village lodges with shared, well-equipped rooms. On the second night you sleep in rustic cabins for 2 to 4 people. Private accommodation is available for an additional 30 USD for the 3 nights.
Can I rent horses, and for which sections are they recommended?
Yes. They are especially recommended for the most demanding climbs on days 2 and 4. The cost is 65 USD per horse per day, and it must be requested in advance or at the briefing, subject to availability.
What happens if I feel unwell during the trek?
Our guide will immediately assess any discomfort caused by altitude, exhaustion or any other situation and provide the necessary assistance, coordinating the appropriate action according to your condition and location.
If the first day was harder than expected, you can rent a horse for the second day, the most challenging climb up to Choquequirao, for about 65 USD, subject to availability.
Are there toilets and showers along the route?
Some camps have toilets and cold showers, and at certain points hot showers are available, usually at an extra cost. These facilities are not available at every camp, but each morning our staff provide hot water for washing.
Do I need trekking poles?
They are highly recommended: they ease the pressure on your knees on the steep descents to the Apurímac River and help on the long climbs. If you bring your own, make sure they have rubber tips. If you don't have any, you can rent them from us.
What should I bring on the Choquequirao Trek?
Quick-drying clothes, trekking boots, a waterproof or windproof jacket, a light backpack, a sleeping bag, a head torch, sunscreen and insect repellent. The weather is variable, with intense heat during the day and cold at night. You will find the full list in the What to bring tab.
Is there phone signal or internet during the hike?
Signal is very limited or non-existent on most of the route, due to the geography of the Apurímac Canyon and the remote location of the camps. Only at a few high points may there be intermittent signal, with no guarantee. We recommend letting your family know that you will be out of contact during the trek.
Can I charge my devices during the trek?
There are no charging points during the hike, so we recommend bringing a fully charged power bank.
How do strikes or roadblocks affect the itinerary?
External factors such as strikes, demonstrations or roadblocks can cause changes. Our team monitors the situation constantly and offers alternatives such as adjusted schedules, routes or rescheduling. That is why we recommend travel insurance that covers possible unforeseen events.
How does the booking process work?
Step 1. Availability check. Write to us at info@sakuraexpedition.com to check dates. We will send you a booking form that each participant must complete.
Step 2. Traveller details. To arrange the entrance fees we need, exactly as shown in the passport, full name, gender, passport number, date of birth (dd/mm/yyyy) and nationality.
Step 3. Deposit and confirmation. Once we receive the forms, we request a deposit of USD 300.00 per person, non-refundable and non-transferable. We recommend booking in advance, as places sell out quickly.
Step 4. Final confirmation. With the entrance fees secured, you will receive the official invoice and your booking will be 100 % guaranteed.
Can I cancel or change the date?
Once the booking is confirmed, cancellations and refunds are not allowed, as services are arranged immediately to guarantee your place. Date changes are subject to availability and the programme's conditions. We recommend reviewing the cancellation policy with your sales representative.
Can I leave my luggage at your office?
Yes. During the trip, your main luggage can stay at our office or at your hotel, free of charge.
Should I tip?
Tipping is part of the tradition of hiking in the Andes. Although our whole team is well paid, any extra amount is always appreciated. It is not mandatory, and you should never feel pressured to do so.
