Before You Book
The best time to visit Vinicunca is the dry season, from April to October or November, when skies are clear and there is less chance of rain, allowing you to see the mountain's most vivid colors and enjoy a safer hike. The route rises above 5,000 m (16,400 ft) above sea level, so we recommend acclimatizing in Cusco for at least two days before the tour, staying hydrated, and avoiding heavy meals the night before. If you have any medical condition related to altitude, consult your doctor before traveling. Cancellations or date changes can be requested up to 48 hours before departure, subject to an administrative fee.

Frequently asked questions about Vinicunca and the Red Valley at sunrise
The experience
Is this programme right for me?
Yes. Because it is a private service, you have more flexibility along the route and an experience shaped around your group. It is an excellent choice for couples, families, keen photographers and groups of friends who want to enjoy Rainbow Mountain and the Red Valley with more privacy, comfort and personal attention.
What time does the tour start?
Pick-up is at 3:30 a.m. from your hotel in Cusco, so you reach Vinicunca first thing and see the sunrise on Rainbow Mountain.
Is it a private tour?
Yes. The experience is entirely private for your group, with a maximum of 6 travellers, which allows greater flexibility and personal attention. If you would prefer a more economical alternative, we also run the same route as a shared service, in groups of up to 18 passengers and on fixed timings; both rates are in the Price tab.
Do you visit Rainbow Mountain at sunrise?
Yes. The programme is designed to arrive early and see the first rays of sun lighting up the mountains and their distinctive colours.
Do you also visit the Red Valley?
Yes. After Vinicunca, and if your group is physically up to it, we continue to the Red Valley viewpoint for a different perspective on the Andean landscape. The entrance ticket is included in the programme.
Will there be many people on Rainbow Mountain?
Because we start earlier than the classic tour, we arrive at a quieter time. Even so, the number of visitors can vary with the date and conditions on the day.
Is there a special moment during the tour?
Yes. On the way back from the hike you will enjoy the Sakura Special Moment, with a herbal tea made from Andean herbs to rest and catch your breath.
How many people are in the group?
The private service runs from 2 passengers and takes a maximum of 6, for more personal attention. The shared service takes up to 18 passengers, and the rate varies with the option you choose.
How far is Rainbow Mountain from Cusco?
It lies roughly 140 km south-east of the city of Cusco. The drive takes around 3 hours by tourist transport, followed by between one hour and an hour and a half of hiking to the summit.
Physical demands and altitude
How difficult is Rainbow Mountain?
The experience is considered moderate, above all because of the altitude, which exceeds 5,000 m above sea level. The trail is not technically complex, but altitude sickness (soroche) and the final slope call for reasonable fitness and prior acclimatisation in Cusco.
How long is the hike from the starting point to the summit?
Usually between one hour and an hour and a half uphill, depending on your pace and acclimatisation. The full round trip covers roughly 5 km, and the ascent is the demanding part.
Could I get altitude sickness?
Yes, it is possible, since the hike takes place above 5,000 m above sea level, where there is less oxygen. Symptoms can include headache, nausea, fatigue or dizziness. To prevent it we recommend acclimatising properly, staying hydrated throughout and resting well before and during the hike.
Can older travellers or people with medical conditions do the tour?
Yes, as long as the person can move unaided and is in reasonable physical condition. We recommend that travellers over 70 and anyone with a pre-existing medical condition have a medical check beforehand. It is precisely because of the altitude and the effort that the private service is the best option in these cases: it lets you go at your own pace and stop whenever you need to.
Does the agency provide an oxygen cylinder during the tour?
Yes. We carry an oxygen cylinder for the group during the hike and a second one in the vehicle. Even so, we recommend each passenger bring a portable oxygen inhaler, especially if you are sensitive to altitude.
The best prevention is still proper acclimatisation, staying hydrated, avoiding heavy meals before the tour and telling your guide about any discomfort from the outset.
What happens if I feel unwell during the hike?
Your safety is our highest priority and all our staff are trained in first aid. If you show signs of soroche, exhaustion or any other discomfort, the team assesses your condition and provides the assistance needed: depending on the situation, we arrange the return with the driver or a transfer to the community first-aid post.
If specialist care is needed, we work with a clinic close to the start of the hike, which can arrange evacuation to Cusco.
Can I hire a horse for part of the route?
Yes. Local villagers offer horses to make part of the climb less demanding. It is not included in the tour: it costs around 100 soles, paid in cash directly to the community muleteers on the day. The horses do not reach the summit or the main viewpoint: they leave you about 10 to 15 minutes' walk from the end point.
Can someone weighing more than 91 kg use the horse service?
No. By decision of the local muleteers, the service is allowed for passengers up to 90 kg. From 91 kg it is not authorised, to protect the welfare of the animals given the demanding altitude and terrain. As an alternative there are motorbikes or the quad-bike tour to the Red Valley and Rainbow Mountain.
Weather, kit and communications
When is the best time to hike to Rainbow Mountain?
The dry season, from April to October or November. In those months the sky is clear and rain is less likely, which brings out the mountain's strong colours and makes for a safer hike.
What should I wear?
Dress in layers, so you can adapt to the sharp cold before dawn, the wind and the strong midday sun. A warm down jacket, comfortable trousers, high-cut hiking boots, gloves, a hat and a rain poncho are essential. The full list is in the What to bring tab.
Can I refill my water bottle?
Yes. Before the hike begins you can refill your water bottle and carry it with you throughout the route.
Is there mobile or internet signal during the visit?
Signal is very limited and, in most cases, unavailable during the hike. At some high points there may be intermittent signal, though it is not guaranteed. We recommend letting family or contacts know that you may be out of touch for around 5 or 6 hours.
